Borderlands: An Illustrated History of the River, People and Politics
To support the production of a new media comic (graphic narrative) by artist Zeke Peña illustrating the political, social and cultural history of the Rio Grande, U.S./Mexico international boundary and the people of the Paso Del Norte region. This graphic narrative will utilize a comic format to document oral histories, folklore, and popular culture unique to indigenous and Latinx communities living on the border. Through targeted and random interviews, research, and conversations, this new work will use visual storytelling to amplify voices and address the intersections of ecology, history, and activism. Working with community activists and educators, this comic will be disseminated online as an educational resource to enhance visibility and deepen audience connections to indigenous and Latinx histories while inviting fronteriz@s to become active participants in the reclaiming of their histories through visual storytelling.
